What stayed useful after the cohort glow faded

We ask alumni for specifics — which module, which template, and where we still fell short.

★★★★☆

Signal Literacy’s canary skew lab finally gave our mobile squad a way to argue for a pause without sounding dramatic. The live critique of our homemade Grafana board was blunt in the best way.

“Client in logistics, Busan hub.” After Observatory Circle we stopped treating p99 as a single number. Our rollback cue now includes partner API freshness — something the course materials nudged us to invent ourselves.

Module five’s rollback storytelling exercise surfaced that our runbooks assumed someone had already decided to roll back. We rewrote them. I would have liked more coverage of feature-flag interactions — that gap still bites us.

Hana from Daegu here. The risk brief template from Canary Studio is taped above my monitor. Short, slightly imperfect, and the only doc our PM actually reads before a ship.

Case study · Payment canary that looked green

A Seoul fintech squad joined Canary Studio after a near-miss where canary error rates stayed flat while authorization latency drifted for a thin slice of corporate cards. During the cohort they rebuilt their risk brief to include issuer-path latency and a “thin segment” checklist.

Three weeks later they paused a midday deploy when the new checklist lit up — even though the main canary panel stayed green. They rolled forward the next morning with a targeted fix. The team credits the partial-signal worksheet, not a new observability vendor.

Case study · Regional retail freeze season

A Jeolla-based retail platform used Observatory Circle to redesign release freezes around local shopping peaks. Instead of a blanket blackout, they defined “signal-sensitive hours” where only deploys with completed risk briefs could proceed.

Incidents during the following peak weekend dropped from three customer-visible events to one minor content glitch. Leadership kept the ritual even after the workshop ended — a quieter win than a big tooling purchase.
